Forest and forest product markets continue to change as companies expand manufacturing facilities, merge with other companies, or close their businesses. MB&G performs analyses of changes in supply and demand factors for logs, pulpwood, and biomass. Our firm’s analyses in these areas range from evaluation of Canadian lumber import issues to individual mill site expansion.

MB&G forestry experts are skilled at utilizing public information sources, such as Forest Inventory & Analysis (FIA) data, to conduct timber supply studies. The company also uses questionnaires to evaluate sawmill characteristics and demand factors. We maintain an up-to-date list of the wood product manufacturing facilities for the western states linked to GIS for graphic display of mill locations to evaluate transportation zones, layers of competitive overlap, and supply and demand balances.

Client Project

Georgia-Pacific

Completed supply-and-demand balance sheets for Georgia-Pacific fiber resources on the West Coast, including development of independent databases of fiber supply outlook for residue chips, roundwood chips, and recycle supply.

Private Client

Developed supply-and-demand analysis outlook for Eastern Washington manufacturing facilities to include review of current manufacturing capacity, competition, and forecasts of demand.

Western Wood Products Association

Developed harvest/growth ratios for defined forest inventory assessment areas as one step in developing life cycle certification for sawmills. Assessment used growth estimates based on US Forest Service - Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) databases.

Financial Institutions

Developed timber supply-and-demand projections, along with other forest business databases, to represent plaintiff banks in a bankruptcy case of a major forest products company. Also evaluated optional business plans and economic projections used to forecast loan repayment alternatives.
