Sr. Scientist / Project Manager

 

FLSA: Exempt

Pay: $50,000-$80,000/YR+

General Summary:

Mason, Bruce & Girard, Inc., (MB&G) a natural resource consulting firm, has an immediate need for a mid or senior level environmental scientist/project manager. Preferred technical background is in fisheries, water quality, wildlife, plant ecology, botany, or wetlands. This position will serve as a Project Manager coordinating multiple projects, directing staff on those projects, leading technical tasks, drafting scopes of work and budgets, and participating in various business development activities. As a member of MB&G’s Environmental Service Group, this position will also provide project support for multi-disciplinary projects managed by others.

Essential Functions/Major Duties

  • Serve as Project Manager on multiple multi-disciplinary projects. Responsible for client satisfaction and delivery of high quality work products. Duties include development and tracking of project scope of work and budget through completion of deliverables within budget and schedule.
  • Provides technical support to projects managed by others.
  • Designs and leads field studies (e.g., wildlife surveys, fish habitat assessment, wetland delineation).
  • Responsible for drafting and editing technical documents (e.g., technical reports, Biological Assessments, wetland reports, NEPA documents, various environmental permit applications).
  • Coordinates and negotiates with regulatory agency staff regarding the application of environmental regulations to client projects.
  • Participates in business development activities, including proposal efforts, marketing activities, and internal strategic planning. Actively promotes MB&G as a premier provider of natural resource consulting services.
  • Mentors junior staff through technical advice, review of written deliverables, and coaching.
  • Provides quality control review of reports and other deliverables.

Job Skills:

  • Excellent understanding of environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, ESA, CWA).
  • Demonstrated regulatory agency liaison and negotiation skills.
  • Strong understanding of data collection protocols for biological resource surveys.
  • Excellent technical report writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent project management skills in client service, team building, project leadership, and project financial management.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to operate independently under minimal supervision.
  • Responsive and client service oriented.
  • Excellent MS Office skills, including data analysis and presentation
  • Understanding of engineering principles and ability to read engineering plans.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS/BA in Biology, Environmental Science or related field required, MS preferred.
  • 5+ years experience as consultant and/or scientist in an environmental consulting firm or A&E firm preferred.
  • Experience with mitigation, restoration, bioengineering, and/or forestry is desired.
Job Conditions:
Work is performed both within the field and in our Portland, OR office. Occasional travel based on project location required. Field work to be performed in all weather conditions, steep rough terrain, and a variety of settings including open fields and forested areas. Extensive computer use, physical ability to operate a telephone, and sit for extended periods of time; may lift/carry up to 50 pounds
