The
MB&G story begins in Portland, Oregon in 1921. David T. Mason, opened
a consulting forestry office in the Terminal Sales Building. It was the
start of a long and distinguished career for David Mason -- who would
eventually emerge as one of the nation's leading voices in forestry issues
and practices. In 1952, F. K. Weyerhaeuser would say this of David Mason,
"No single person has been more influential in promoting sound
forest management on private forest lands than he."
Back in the early 1920's, the firm started to expand, a trend which continues
today. In 1923, Mason was joined by Carl M. Stevens; the partnership was
known as Mason & Stevens. They remained in business as forestry consultants
until 1931 when David Mason was appointed manager of the Western Pine
Association, and moved to Washington, D.C. Stevens chose to form a partnership
with the firm’s secretary, Donald Bruce, and for the next five years
the consulting firm was known as Stevens & Bruce.
Longing to be closer to his adopted Northwest forests, David Mason returned
to Portland in 1936. Carl Stevens later left the firm, and a new partnership
was formed by David Mason and Donald Bruce called Mason & Bruce. The
years were busy, and the demand for guidance in developing sustained forestry
practices was growing. A dozen years later, James Girard joined the group
after he had retired from the U.S. Forest Service, and in 1948 the firm
adopted its present name, Mason, Bruce & Girard.
For the next several decades, the goals and core values envisioned by
Mason, Bruce & Girard were clear: to be responsive to client needs
with honesty and integrity. Today those goals live on. In the 1990s MB&G's
services expanded to include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and
Environmental Services. The firm now provides a full range of technical
specialists and analytical tools to solve our client's natural resource,
inventory management, and permitting needs.
